CapCut for Business: Create Professional Short Videos in 20 Minutes

Short-form video is the highest-reach content format for small businesses right now. LinkedIn Reels, Instagram Reels, and TikTok all prioritise video content in their algorithms.

CapCut makes this format accessible without a video editing background. It's free, works on both mobile and desktop, and has features that previously required expensive software.

Here's how to use it for your business.

What CapCut Is

CapCut is a free video editing app (mobile and desktop) owned by ByteDance. It's the most popular short-form video editor outside of what's built into social platforms.

The features most relevant for business content:

  • AI auto-captions (automatically transcribes and adds subtitles)
  • Background removal from video
  • Text-to-video and template library
  • Background music library
  • Speed adjustments and transitions
  • Easy resize for different platform formats

Cost: Free. There's a Pro plan with additional features, but everything in this guide works on the free version.

The Two Approaches to Business Video

Approach 1: Talk-to-camera content. You record yourself speaking. CapCut adds captions, trims silences, and polishes the edit.

Approach 2: Text-based video. You use templates, add text on screen, and pair with background music. No face required.

Both are valid for business. I'll cover both.

Approach 1: Talk-to-Camera Video (Step by Step)

Step 1: Record Your Video

Record on your phone — vertical format (9:16) for Reels and TikTok. 60-90 seconds is the ideal length for most business content.

Tips for better quality:

  • Natural window light, facing the window (not with window behind you)
  • Keep your background clean and professional or use blur
  • Speak clearly; don't rush

Don't worry about a perfect take. CapCut makes editing easy.

Step 2: Import to CapCut

Open CapCut (desktop or mobile). Click "New Project." Import your video clip(s).

Step 3: Trim the Video

Watch through and mark the in and out points to cut dead air at the beginning and end. Use the split tool to cut any significant mistakes (select the clip at the mistake, click "Split," delete the unwanted section).

Step 4: Add Auto-Captions

This is the feature that makes the most difference.

Mobile: Click "Text" in the bottom menu → "Auto Captions." Desktop: Click "Captions" in the top menu → "Auto Captions."

CapCut will transcribe your video and add subtitles automatically. This takes 30-60 seconds for a 90-second video.

Once done, click through each caption block to correct any transcription errors (usually 5-10% accuracy issues). Adjust the font, size, and position.

Why this matters: 80% of social media video is watched without sound. Captions mean your content works for the silent-viewing majority.

Step 5: Add a Title and Branding

Add a text element at the start of your video with your main point or hook. This appears as text on screen and helps stop the scroll.

Consider adding your business name or logo as a watermark (Text → add name → position in corner → adjust opacity to about 60%).

Step 6: Add Background Music (Optional)

CapCut has a royalty-free music library. For business content, keep music low (20-30% volume) so it doesn't compete with your voice.

Mobile: Click "Audio" → "Music." Desktop: Click "Audio" in the left panel.

Step 7: Export

Click "Export." Select 1080p. CapCut will process and save the video.

Total editing time for a 90-second video: 10-15 minutes with practice.

Approach 2: Text-Based Video (No Face Required)

Some business owners don't want to appear on camera. Text-based videos work well for tips, statistics, before/after comparisons, and quotes.

Step 1: Use a Template

CapCut's template library has hundreds of business-relevant templates.

Mobile: Tap "Templates" at the bottom of the home screen. Desktop: Click "Templates" in the left sidebar.

Search for your content type: "business tip," "stats," "quote," "tutorial."

Select a template you like. Tap "Use Template." Import your images or videos where prompted. Edit the text to your content.

Step 2: Customise the Text

Replace the template text with your content. Make sure the key message appears on screen for at least 2-3 seconds — long enough to read.

Step 3: Add Captions if Voiceover

If you're adding a voiceover (record your voice separately in the audio section), use the same Auto Captions feature.

Business Video Ideas for Beginners

  • "3 mistakes [target clients] make with [topic]" — 3 text-based slides
  • "Before and after" — describe a client problem and resolution
  • Answer one question you get asked frequently
  • Share one insight from your week
  • Show your process (screen recording + voiceover)

You don't need a professional setup. Consistency matters more than production quality at this stage.

Resizing for Different Platforms

CapCut can resize your video for different platforms from one edit.

Desktop: After editing, click "Export" → "Change Ratio" → select the platform format (9:16 for Reels/TikTok, 1:1 for LinkedIn, 16:9 for YouTube).

Note: When you change the ratio, some elements will shift. Check and readjust before exporting.

The Time Investment

First video: Plan 45-60 minutes including the learning curve.

Third video onwards: 20-25 minutes per 90-second video.

Batch approach: Record 4 videos in one session (30 minutes recording), edit all four in one session (90 minutes total). You now have a week of video content.
